Fragrance Allergens Explained: What They Are and Why They Matter

Fragrance adds beauty and emotion to everyday rituals. But for some individuals, certain fragrance ingredients can trigger irritation or allergic reactions. As awareness grows, more consumers are asking: What exactly are fragrance allergens, and how do they affect skin?

What are fragrance allergens?

Fragrance allergens are specific aroma chemicals known to trigger allergic reactions in some individuals. These reactions may include:

• Redness
• Itching
• Dermatitis
• Eczema flare-ups

Not everyone reacts to fragrance allergens, but those with sensitive skin or existing skin conditions may be more susceptible.

Why fragrance allergens matter

Fragrance allergy is one of the most common causes of cosmetic-related allergic contact dermatitis worldwide. Reactions may occur due to:

• Compromised skin barrier
• Repeated exposure over time
  
• High concentrations in leave-on products
• Sensitization over time
  

Because fragrance is present in perfumes, skincare, haircare, and household products, exposure to these formulas can also cause reactions.

The EU fragrance allergen disclosure rule

The European Union began requiring disclosure in 2003 of 26 specific fragrance allergens when present above certain thresholds. These include ingredients commonly found in essential oils and traditional fragrance blends.

Previously, companies were not required to disclose any ingredients used in their fragrances. 

As awareness grew of fragrance allergens, this regulation aims to help consumers identify potential triggers and make informed choices.

Beyond the EU 26

In 2023, this list was expanded to 82 fragrance allergens, with compliance required by 2026.

While the EU 26 list is a helpful starting point, it did not represent all possible sensitizing ingredients. Ongoing research continues to identify additional fragrance components that may cause reactions in some individuals.

The future of fragrance

As awareness of fragrance allergens grows, a new category of allergen-conscious fragrance is emerging. These fragrances aim to reduce or eliminate common sensitizers while maintaining a luxury scent experience. Brands, such as Havyn, are specifically formulating perfumes without the EU-listed fragrance allergens and are testing with sensitive-skin users to expand fragrance access to more people.

How to identify fragrance allergens in products

Look for:

• Full ingredient lists
• Brand emphasizing transparency
• Products tested for sensitive skin
• Disclosure of fragrance components, not just "parfum" or "fragrance" on the ingredient list, which can represent dozens or even hundreds of many individual components
  
  • Fragrance allergens are often listed right before or after the word "fragrance". Common fragrance allergens include linalool, limonene, geraniol, citronellol, and citral.
